-   Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kans.) [introduced](https://www.slotkin.senate.gov/2025/12/15/slotkin-moran-introduce-bipartisan-bill-to-crack-down-on-cryptocurrency-scams/) the Strengthening Agency Frameworks for Enforcement of Cryptocurrency (SAFE Crypto) Act, which would create a federal task force to identify, track, and stop crypto fraud.
-   In an interview with Punchbowl, Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott (R-S.C.) [said](https://punchbowl.news/article/vault/defi-crypto-congress/) it was critical to get DeFi policy right within market structure legislation.
-   House Representative Mike Carey (R-Ohio) and others [sent](https://carey.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rep.-Carey-IRS-Crypto-Tax-Staking-Letter.pdf) a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent asking him to review and update guidance on the taxation of staking rewards before the 2026 tax year begins.
-   Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) [sent](https://www.banking.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/12152025lettertobessentandbondirepancakeswap.pdf) a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Attorney General Pamela Bondi requesting information about whether the Treasury and the DOJ are “investigating significant national security risks posed by decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges.”
-   House Committee on Financial Services Chairman French Hill (R-Ark.) and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) [released](https://financialservices.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=410927) a staff report titled “Operation Choke Point 2.0: Biden’s Debanking of Digital Assets.”
-   Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) [released](https://democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/democrats-judiciary.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/2025-11-24.hjc-dem-staff-report-trump-crypto-corruption-small_0.pdf) a staff report titled “Trump, Crypto, and A New Age of Corruption.”

-   Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon was [sentenced](https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/crypto-enabled-fraudster-sentenced-orchestrating-40-billion-fraud) to 15 years in prison for committing wire fraud and conspiring to commit securities fraud, commodities fraud, and wire fraud in connection with his involvement in Terraform Labs and the TerraUSD and Luna cryptocurrencies.
-   The DOJ [announced](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-seizure-tai-chang-scam-compound-domain-used-cryptocurrency) the seizure of a web domain, which was used to target and defraud Americans through cryptocurrency investment fraud scams. The domain was used by those located at the Tai Chang scam compound in Burma.
-   A California resident [pleaded](https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/guilty-plea-and-superseding-indictment-announced-social-engineering-scheme-stole-263) guilty in connection with his role in a multi-state conspiracy that used social engineering to steal hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from victims throughout the United States.
-   A Los Angeles-based director and writer was [convicted](https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/hollywood-director-and-writer-convicted-11-million-fraud-subscription-streaming) for his role in a fraudulent scheme to steal $11 million from a subscription video on-demand streaming service and then using a portion of the funds to speculate on crypto.
-   A senior promoter of a large-scale cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme known as “IcomTech” was [sentenced](https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/fraudster-sentenced-71-months-prison-crypto-ponzi-scheme-icomtech) to 71 months in prison for his role in the scheme and for reentering the United States illegally after having been deported.
-   Federal agents [seized](https://www.justice.gov/usao-ednc/pr/department-justice-agents-seize-85-million-cryptocurrency-and-disrupt-investment-fraud) nearly $8.5 million worth of Tether, which had been traced to a cryptocurrency address linked to money stolen from victims of cryptocurrency investment scams.

-   FinCEN [assessed](https://www.fincen.gov/news/news-releases/fincen-assesses-35-million-penalty-against-paxful-facilitating-suspicious) a $3.5 million penalty against Paxful, Inc. and Paxful USA, Inc. for “willful violations of the Bank Secrecy Act.” Paxful also pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the Travel Act and other federal criminal charges.
-   FinCEN [issued](https://www.fincen.gov/news/news-releases/fincen-issues-financial-trend-analysis-ransomware) a Financial Trend Analysis on ransomware incidents in Bank Secrecy Act data between 2022 and 2024.

-   Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle W. Bowman [testified](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/testimony/bowman20251202a.htm) that the Federal Reserve needs “to provide clarity in treatment on digital assets to ensure that the banking system is well placed to support digital asset activities.”
